Volunteers organize cleanup effort at refuge
The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is a little cleaner today after volunteer efforts by members of the Friends of the Wichitas.
Up until last week, the refuge remained closed due to the ongoing partial government shutdown. That prevented organized volunteer efforts by the Friends. Ouida Plumlee, a group member, said as soon as she received word Friday that the refuge was one of 38 priority sites to be allowed to open on a limited basis, she immediately began efforts to organize a cleanup effort Tuesday.
“Normally, we do this on the first Tuesday of each month,” she said. “This is the first opportunity since the shutdown began that we’ve been able to come out as a group to clean up.”
